Where are we now?

 Family!  You are all so amazing.

It's been a while since I've posted an update on the Crandlemire-Keenleyside Family Legacy Fund.  It is now just over $130,000. Yes, you read the right!!

The Community Granting program is now open, and our fund alone represents $2,135 of funding towards health and wellness in our community.

In 2021 it will be the Community Foundations 20th birthday!  So you can expect that we'll be planning a party (or two)...covid depending to celebrate, to fundraise and to spread the good work of the foundation.  I'll be writing posts as those ideas develop to see if anyone is interested in helping out.

The day following our families annual Christmas Shopping Trip happens to be National Philanthropy Day. On this day, the Golden & District Community Foundation announced our Great Aunt Isabelle’s Legacy Estate Gift of $130,000. It is an incredible donation which combined with the $30,000 already raised will allow the GDCF to grant $6,400 annually in our families name! Wow!

This of course has me thinking that it has been a minute since as a group we raised the donation bar for ourselves. So, with that said, between now and December 3rd, #GivingTuesday, I’m challenging us to raise an additional $2,500. This amount would give our fund another $100 in annual granting power for a total of...

Goodbye Isabelle

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Isabelle Lottie Robinson nee Crandlemire this past July 9, 2018.  Born February 15, 1930, in Enderby, BC, Isabelle moved with her family to Okanagan Centre where she grew up pilfering fruit from the orchards along with her brother and sisters and all the other school children.

She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Keenleyside, her granddaughter Sarah Camm along with nieces & nephews scattered across Alberta and BC. She is pre-deceased by her husband Dale Robinson, her son Robert Keehn and her siblings Denise Shular, Albert Crandlemire, Nola Kabella and Anita Crandlemire.

Isabelle was feisty, funny, and loved red! She was generous and loving.  In her forties, Isabelle went to school to become a nurse after years working in restaurants.  She was so very proud of being a nurse and spent a great number of years working at the Colonel Belcher in Calgary, AB.

Isabelle was an avid reader, even though she needed a magnifying glass - that didn’t stop her.  She had a sweet tooth like no other, from chocolates to mints to marshmallows.  She loved painting, bowling, firemen, and any excuse to buy a pretty necklace or three along with matching rings. 

She so enjoyed all the visitors that came through the doors over the seven years where Cedars Villa in Calgary was her home, and in the years prior in her home on Kildare Crescent.

In her true generous nature, Isabelle has donated the bulk of her estate to the Golden and District Community Foundation in the Crandlmire-Keenleyside Family Legacy Fund.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to thisfund in her name.

Isabelle would not have tolerated a funeral, and so at her request - rather her insistence - we are throwing a celebration of life party.  After all, she is who must be obeyed ;)

Denise Shular

We've written before about both Isabelle Robinson, and Denise Shular, but today I want to share with you how these sisters both continue to give back to our community.  Denise & Peter recently sold their home and moved into an apartment complex in town.  It was important to Auntie (great in my case) to repay a loan that Isabelle had long forgotten about.  Denise wrote a cheque and asked me to deliver it to her sister in Calgary, which I did.  After seeing it, and reading the letter, Isabelle looked and me and said "I don't remember this, I don't need it."

Isabelle decided to donate the money back to the Golden & District Community Foundation, in the Crandlemire-Keenleyside Family Legacy Fund.  This $3,000 gift takes our families fund to just a few thousand dollars short of $30,000.  This amount will see our fund able to provide an approximate grant to the community of $1,500 annually.




With Auntie Denny's recent passing, we wanted to share with you the power of this gift.  Auntie Denny, through Isabelle, will be giving back to Golden now and forever.  Donations in Memory of others can be a powerful way to give back and I am so thankful for the gracious example of generosity these sisters have shown us.

Since my Nanny passed away last month, my mom and I have been thinking a lot about what kind of donation to the community would best suit her.  We've worked out that a direct donation to the Durand Manor's garden project and to the local Hospice Society (which is not a registered charity), will do the most good in the short term.

In the long term, while she wasn't a Crandlemire, or a Keenleyside, I'm going to make a donation in her name to our Family Fund.  I really believe in the long term impact that the Foundation can make in Golden, and know that charities like Interior Health, or others, can apply for grants in the future - so the money can keep on working for her, for us, and for our Golden.

Mom Leads the Way!

It's that time family, when we really try to grow our fund to celebrate Grandpa's birthday.  We set a Big, Audacious Goal back in February to get to $22,000.  Today, Mom (variously known as Grandma, G-Ma, Ev, and Dear mother, best mother in the world) made her gift of $500.  We don't have to wait to the last day, if this is the gift you choose for Christmas or Birthdays this year.

I'm also glad to tell you all, that the GDCF included our first grant to the Durand Manor Fence project.  Also funded was the Legion Furnace (Dad was happy about that one) and the Local Intelligence Project.

In 2012 our family came together to create a donor advised fund to honor our grandparents (and great grandparents) legacy in Golden, BC.  All principal donations are held in trust within the Golden & District Community Foundation (GDCF) and the interest is granted to charitable programs within the community that are in support of health & wellness.  We have found that by donating this way, the money keeps working – and works collectively – to bring more and more long-term funding to our community.

As of November, 2017 the fund currently has a value of approximately $27,000.   Your donation has helped us move towards our current goal of reaching a total fund value of $30,000 which means that the GDCF can donate a grant of approximately $1,500 annually in our families names.

Our 2013 Fundraising Goal

A big thank you to everyone who voted to determine or 2013 Fundraising Goal!!

With six votes, the winning option was $22,000.  Given our families philanthropic track record, while this goal won't be easy, it will no doubt inspire us to continue to support our community in permanent way.

You'll see a new tracking bar on the right hand side of the blog, keeping you up to date on our overall process, as well as process for this year.

So, are you ready?  We have nine months to raise $3,606.08.

Can you believe it?

In three short years, our family has donated over $18,000.  What an amazing accomplishment.  This is money that will stay in the community and work for us, for...well, for ever.

I feel so absolutely blessed to be a part of a family that is in the position to help others so significantly as ours is.

As we have so successfully met our first goal of raising $10,000 - we are now in a position to be able to advise the GDCF on grants - so exciting!  Mom is going to write a post about that in a few weeks - but for now, we have the opportunity to decided how we want to grow our fund into the future.

In 2013 - do we want to grow to $20,000?  $25,000?  What can we achieve if we continue to work together?

Ride on.

Dear Family,

The way we work together to create something bigger than all of us, honouring the legacy's of our grandparents and great grandparents, has been a great source of pride and comfort to me this last year.

Today I want to tell you that the shares that Nelson, Jessie and I donated to the GDCF as part of Pat's legacy to this community were sold for $5,811.50.

Pat's donation brings the total in our Family Fund to $18,383.92.

This December 26, 2012 marked Grandpa Bob Keenleyside's 81st Birthday.  The entire family (everyone that was in Golden) came together at Kara's to celebrate.  It was absolutely lovely to spend so much time together during the holidays!

This year it was our families absolute privilege to be able to tell our Grandpa/Father/Friend/Husband/Grandfather-in-Law.... that we reached our first goal of fundraising $10,000 for the Crandlemire-Keenleyside Family Legacy fund.

Not only did we reach our first goal, we blasted it!

We brought the total of our fund to $12,572.42 (125.72%) of our goal!  Bob was thrilled, filled with joy, at what we have been able to accomplish in two short years.

Thank you so much to all of the family and friends who have donated and who will continue to support our families initiative as our fund continues to grow over the coming years.

60 New Visitors!

A huge thank you to everyone who shared our 'Welcome Newcomers' post with their friends and family!  We had an extra 60 people swing by and say hello last week....Well - no one actually left a comment, but our stats tell us that we had quite a few new visitors.

From Canada, the US and as far as Malaysia, Germany and Sweden - thank you for stopping by to visit our families blog.

We didn't take in any additional donations just yet (through CanadaHelps) but with Christmas right around the corner, I have faith that we will blast through our $10,000 just in time to set a new goal for 2013.

Welcome Newcomers!

If you have just recently stumbled upon our family's blog, welcome!

There is nothing like the Christmas season to have giving on the mind. It’s a time of year when there are so many people in need, and we receive so many asks for support.

Two years ago, my family came together to create a donor advised family fund to direct our philanthropic interests. Held within the Golden & District Community Foundation (GDCF), all donations to the Principal of the fund are in trust. The Foundation has support from the Columbia Valley Credit Union for above market interest rates – and it is the interest that is granted to programs within the community that need support.

We have found that by donating this way, the money keeps working – and works collectively – to bring more and more funding to our community.

After we established our fund within the GDCF, we set a goal of raising $10,000 (the minimum before the interest earned can be used for grant giving).  As we are on the precipice of reaching that goal, we find that it is now time to set a new goal, so that our fund continues to grow each year and we can continue to support our community now – and in the future.

99.32% - So Close!

It's not hard to tell that Evelyn Keenleyside really beleives in and supports the work of the foundation as she recently donated $500 to our fund.

Other Christmas and Birthday donations are starting to trickle in as well, so we are now 99.32% towards our first goal of $10,000.

We only need $67.58 - will you make that donation?

You can donate in two different ways - either online through Canada Helps, or you can drop a cheque or cash off with Nola at the BC Liquor Store and she will make the deposit for you.

I heard back from mom today...and guess what?!

Our family fund is at 93.32% of our first goal of $10,000.  We only need another $667.58 to reach the mark.  Wow.

I'm literally speechless.

Alright, not literally - because..well, come on.  I'm never actually speechless.

I'm literally impressed.

Yes, impressed!  We have stuck on this path together, as a family and I am once again reminded of just how fantastic we are.

An Update on the Family Fund

I've asked mom to check with the foundation for an update on the Family Fund.  I think it would be a really great year to push past the $10,000 mark.

As we work to reach our goal I would like to reach out to the rest of the family to see if anyone is interested in writing a post or two.

It would be wonderful to read your thoughts on community involvement/community giving or maybe why you believe in/support our family fund.  It really could be anything at all.
